How will the elimination of Illinois’ grocery tax impact communities and shoppers?

In 2024, Governor JB Pritzker called for getting rid of Illinois’ one percent, statewide tax on groceries. The General Assembly took Pritzker up on that and signed a law to get rid of the tax, which officially expired at the start of this year.
But many Illinoisans are still paying that tax. The money from the grocery tax went to local governments and many of them have responded by re-imposing the tax through their village boards or city councils. Some Illinois mayors and economic experts give their take.
